We call ourselves a Christian; a follower of Christ, but do we examine our daily lives to see if we are really living as Christ would want us to live?

Christianity goes far beyond the mere “head-knowledge” of the principles of our faith which we find in Holy Scripture. Many have great knowledge of what God’s Word says. They hear His Word and are well-learned in what it says, but are they actually “doers” of His Word?

Real Christianity is rooted in a love for God and His Word that compels us to actively live out what we believe, and express it in every situation in our daily lives, in the ways that we think, act, speak and feel.

When we approach everyday situations from the perspective of God’s ways and purposes, we will stop and ask ourselves questions such as, “How would Jesus want me to apeak to that person?” or “How would Jesus want me to respond to that person’s attitude or behaviour?” or “How would Jesus want me to respond to that person’s obvious need?”

The answer lies in 1 Corinthians Chapter 13. Let’s have a look at what God’s Word says is true Christ-like love is.

Love is patient.

Love is not jealous, boastful, proud or rude.

Love does not demand its own way.

Love is not irritable.

Love does not keep a record of being wronged.

Love does not rejoice about injustice.

Love rejoices in the truth.

Love never gives up.

Love never loses faith.

Love is always hopeful.

Love endures through every circumstance.

If we are truly honest, we will admit that we struggle with most of these character traits on a daily basis. Sometimes we seem to handle things beautifully and want to be like this all the time, but other times, when we are tired from a stressful day at work, we respond to things the opposite of this Biblical definition of Christ-like love.

God wants us just to be honest with Him about our failings, but with a desire to want to change. He is looking at our heart. He searches our hearts to see if we have any desire to want to be transformed from our carnal, fleshly self into a person who will respond to all of life’s challenges with His grace.

So, let us examine our lives and, if we need to get on our knees and ask the Lord to help us to change, let’s do so without delay!

A while back, when I was having a time of prayer, I felt the Holy Spirit say, “When are my people going to let God dwell in His House? They have evicted Him with their compromise and complacency, and it is full of the deeds of darkness.”

I was startled by the force of this message, and so I began to write the following, which I believe is also what God feels about His Church:

“He is the OWNER of the House. We get to live in His House, but it must be under HIS conditions. God’s rules and conditions will PROTECT His House. It is GOD who knows what is best for those who dwell in His House, but they act like THEY own the House, and they behave in ways that are CONTRARY to God’s “House Rules”. If His people continue to rebel and run His House in their own ways, they will cause great damage to His House, and many churches will fall because of this.

The parable of the Vineyard tells us that the Owner of the Vineyard had gone away on a long journey and had sent people to “sort it out” whilst He was away, but the people who were supposed to be looking after the Vineyard beat up those whom the Owner had sent to them. When He sent His only Son to go and “sort it out”, they killed him! This is what God’s people are doing every time someone comes to them to warn them to Wake Up and “Prepare the Way of the Lord”. His people push them out and say, “We don’t need you! We have been ‘doing church’ like this for a long time. We are quite happy thank you! Leave us to do it OUR way”.

God’s people have EVICTED God from His OWN House! Through the many “Wake Up” calls He has been sending to the global Church, God is trying to enter His Dwelling Place again, but the people won’t let Him in. WAKE UP Church! Open the doors and let God back in HIS House! Let Him have HIS way in HIS House! How long are we going to bind and gag Him and throw Him out every time He tries to get back in?

Why do we think we can do a better job on our own, without Him? Who do we think we are to presume that we can do the works of God without Him? The Church knows the truth but is doing nothing of any significance about it, other than continually implementing the ‘ideas of men’ to try to solve their problems and those of society.

The outcome of the failings of the Church is that the nations are perishing. The Church is not representing the truth of Christ on this earth. The Church is delivering a diluted message that is merely pleasant and soothing to the ears of its hearers, but doesn’t convict them of sin or the need to repent and believe His word. Without God in the House, the Church’s message is devoid of the challenging, convicting, life-transforming power the Holy Spirit. If we don’t let God back into His House to bring it into order, the house that WE have built for ourselves, on the shifting sands of our own desires, will crumble and fall.”

I believe that many followers of Christ have a wrong view of God’s counsel and correction. When He convicts them of sin through the counsel of His Word, they think that He is condemning and punishing them. However, this thinking is FAR from the truth! The purpose of God’s counsel and correction is the demonstration of His DEEP LOVE for those who have become followers of Christ. God’s desire is to reveal to us what is wrong in our lives and then show us from His Word what we need to do to correct the things that He has pointed out.

When we receive God’s correction with a thankful heart and apply His counsel with humility, ALL of heaven rejoices at our obedience! God’s correction is for our ultimate BENEFIT. It is His loving restraint, designed to prevent us from falling into situations which will reap catastrophe and destruction in our lives, which is why it is so vital that we read His Word and obey what He says.

Whilst His correction may be painful to bear, if we  heed His correction and do not resist it in a spirit of pride and rebellion, then we will learn and grow in both our earthly and spiritual lives. But, if we DO resist God’s counsel and correction, and consistently rebel against it, consequences will begin to be brought into effect in our lives through the fulfilment of God’s eternal Law which confirms clearly that we will reap what we sow.

“For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”Ecclesiates 12:14 KJV

If we proclaim to be followers of Christ, we deceive ourselves if we think we can live a life of rebellion against God’s Word, and for this not to have any consequences.

So, why do we STILL insist on wilfully engaging in behaviour and practices that are diametrically opposed to God’s counsel and correction…?

To me, ‘abiding in Christ’ means to have such a deep relationship with the Lord that we think, feel, speak and act according to what His Word teaches us, instructs us, exhorts us, and commands us to do. The things we think must honour and please Jesus. The things we say must honour and please Jesus. The things we feel in our silent emotions must honour and please Jesus, and the things we do must honour and please Jesus. To me, THIS is ‘abiding in Christ’.

Our every thought, feeling, word and deed should be motivated solely by obedience to the Word of God. If we find that in any area of our life we are not honouring and pleasing Jesus, then we need to stop that thing IMMEDIATELY, confess and repent of it before God and receive His cleansing and forgiveness through the blood of Christ (1 John 1:9).

If we know that what we are thinking, feeling, saying and doing is NOT in obedience to the Word of God, and we fail to to anything about it (i.e confess and repent of it), our soul is in great danger. If we continually fail to respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit about the things we are doing which dishonour the Lord, slowly but surely we will become desensitized to these dishonouring things, and we will just do them without any thought of the potential eternal consequences.

Many followers of Christ have ship-wrecked their faith through failing to examine their daily lives in the light of God’s Word. If we would do this simple task each day, the habit would soon become our automatic response in any given situation. When practised frequently, we would KNOW almost immediately when we have thought wrong thoughts, felt wrong feelings, spoken wrong words and done wrong things. We would sense the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and we would be quick to put rights all our wrongs.

Abiding in Christ is not some ‘airy-fairy’ feeling of tranquility; to me it is a command to be alert and on our guard against the subtle works of darkness that seek to pounce upon us when we least expect it. To me, abiding in Christ means to be transformed by the renewing of our mind and to be diligent in our application of God’s Word in every area of our life, thus becoming like Christ in thought and word and deed.

Abiding in Christ is not an emotion of peace; it is a command to rise up and respond in a spiritual and godly manner to all that life throws at us (see Philippians 4:6).  When we do this, the outcome of this ACTIVE ‘abiding in Christ’ WILL bring about in our hearts and minds the peace of God which passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

So, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, let us abide in Him, at all times, for our daily peace and our eternal security.

Jesus preached God’s Good News as simply as this: “The Time promised by God has come at last. The Kingdom of God is near. Repent of your sins and believe the Good News.”  Mark 1:14-16 NLT (Emphasis is my own)

Jesus was speaking about HIMSELF in this passage, as being the One who is fulfilling the declaration that “The time promised by God has come at last. The Kingdom of God is near.” His Heavenly Father sent Him into the world to bring the reality and the hope of salvation to those who will REPENT of their sins and believe this Good News.

So we must ask ourself this penetrating question: “Will I repent of my sins and believe God’s incredible Good News that I can be saved from eternity in hell by putting my faith in Jesus Christ, the only One who can save me?”

With all my heart I pray that whoever reads this post will respond to God’s amazing gift of salvation. Jesus Himself told us EXACTLY what to do; Repent and believe. It could not be any simpler.

As the apostle Paul says, so I also say to you, ” [I] urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain… I tell you, now is the time of God’s favour, now is the day of salvation.”  – 2 Corinthians 6:1-2

Let TODAY be the day that you respond to God and accept His free gift of salvation. Do what Jesus says (repent of your sins and believe the Good News), then obey His command to “Go now, and leave your life of sin.” – John 8:11 NIV

A good and faithful child responds in obedience to his/her parents’ loving instructions concerning good and healthy behaviour. God is our heavenly Father, and His Holy Word sets out how WE (who have now become His children through faith in His Son Jesus Christ) should conduct ourselves and live our lives once we have become followers of Christ. We deceive ourselves if we proclaim to be followers of Christ but continue to live like the devil.

A follower of Christ FOLLOWS Christ!
